Established in the early 1970s by Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairoa Kuia Topsy Ratahi and Huia Timu started working with Whānau from a shed. KWS has over 50 years of experience providing a Tangata Whenua response to ending homelessness and realising the aspirations of Whānau.

Kahungunu Whānau Services is a Kaupapa Māori organisation providing housing solutions & social support services across the Wellington region. Our services are strongly underpinned by a Te Ao Māori worldview. This provides a significant point of difference in the way that KWS operates and forms the foundational platform through which we view all actions.

Our approach is based on Whānau Ora; a philosophy, an outcome and a model of practice for achieving Whānau wellbeing. It is strength-based, placing Whānau at the centre, focusing on; self-determination; self-management; and self-sufficiency. Our approach to service delivery is strongly reinforced by our organisational values: Manaakitanga, Kotahitanga, Rangatiratanga, Whanaungatanga. We focus on self-determination and pursue vibrant, flourishing futures for generations to come.

Activities:
Our Vision is to reclaim Raahui Pookeka (Huntly) through our voice and our community through deliberate actions to bring back the beauty, street by street, whaanau by whanau by ultimately working to connect with all whanau and our Marae to achieve their aspirations.

Our Projects are:

Mara Kai – Te Pataka O Rahui Pookeka
Our traditional and contemporary practice to nurture our people was through Mara Kai. Raahui Pookeka takes its name from Waikato rangatira, Te Putu, who, during times of scarce food supply, a ‘Raahui’ was placed with a ‘Pou’ to manage and distribute kai (mainly the eel supplies from the lakes surrounding Raahui Pookeka) amongst the haapu.

Te Pataka o Raahui Pookeka (TPRP) is simply to nurture our whenua and wai to grow and replenish our Mara traditions and tuna population using Maramataka to feed ourselves and others.

Te Whare Hauora O Raahui Pookeka – Whare Oranga
With joined up efforts between Te Wharekura o Rakaumanga and our Marae communities since 1999, Whare Oranga has been a fitness and sports hub.

From 2021, with collaborative efforts, we will grow Whare Oranga into a Hauora Precinct. From wellbeing services including Waka Ama, rugby league and netball to Rongoa Maaori and integrated health care services (clinical and indigenous). We will build Hauora Maaori and western models of care to serve the wider community in North Waikato. These will be built and delivered based on the needs of Maaori but for all people to access. From mirimiri to dental, to fitness and diagnostic, the Hauora precinct will have suites of services to cater to all ages.

Raahui Pookeka Papakainga:
It takes a village to raise a child and it takes whanau to build the village. Our approach to housing will incorporate all aspects of living and thriving in a village/marae/community. Without love, respect, and obligations for each other, and without nurturing te taiao me ona tikanga, a house is just walls, windows, and doors.

We will be deliberate about the designs and plans of our homes to adapt for intergenerational growth. They will be sustainable and affordable to address current and future climate challenges. Most importantly our papakainga will ensure whanau live in safety and regardless of their income and housing situation (rent/own/lease) to live side by side without stigma.
